Phonics: Long vowel u with silent e
Watch - The Magic E Song - YouTubeMagic e / The Long Vowel Song | Best Phonics - YouTube
Review words with long vowel o with silent e (See Long Vowel o with Silent e under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading)
Practice reading words with long vowel u with silent e (See Long Vowel u with Silent e under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading). It should be noted that the long vowel u has 2 sounds -"yoo" as in tube and "oo" as in flute.
Practice spelling the following words: cube, fuse, cute, huge, tube, mule
Read each word and have your child write it on a piece of paper.
Challenge Words: bluebell, fusebox
Review Word Parts with long vowel i with silent e
Write 10 words with the word part -ide (example - ride, hide, slide etc.) Write a consonant, consonant blend, or consonant digraph to make a real or nonsense word. We do this activity in class on whiteboards, but a piece of paper is fine. Please have your child read the words back to you and be sure they have underlined the word part. If they can think of more words, great! I usually make it a game by giving them 2 minutes to write as many words as they can. You may also have them think of words with the word parts - ine, -ipe, - ite.
Reading
I assigned the nonfiction book, Animal Dads, by Barbara Schwartz. Click on link
https://www.readinga-z.com/books/themed-nonfiction-series/ then type in the title and search (Please read this book to them if they are unable to read it by themselves). After reading, complete Animal Dads worksheet (See Animal Dads under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading for template). Have them think of examples that show animal dads caring for their babies.
I assigned the read aloud story, How to Cheer Up Dad, by Fred Koehler on You Tube. Click on the link
How To Cheer Up Dad - Read Aloud Picture Book ... - YouTube and listen to the story. Afterward.
have your child complete a retell worksheet for this story. (See Retell under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading for template). If you have time later, select another fiction book from Reading A-Z (see link) or Epic books and repeat the assignment. Have your child verbally and accurately retell the story back to you.
Next Step (optional): Draw then write their retell on a separate piece of paper (They will have to do this in grade 1). If your child is not ready to do this, please do not force them to do it.
Select 2 fiction or nonfiction books on you child's instructional reading level and practice reading fluency and comprehension (Reading A-Z - Leveled Readers & Epic have all reading levels). You can check the level of the readers they have been bringing home to know their instructional level. If they begin reading say level B pretty well, you can have them practice on level C. Level C is where they should be when they leave kindergarten.
Sight Words
Students should continue learning all 68 sight words. If your child has mastered all 68, they should move on to the Fry's list that is accessible on the class website. Flash cards are a good way to practice.
