Phonics: Long vowels a & i with silent e
Watch - The Magic E Song - YouTubeMagic e / The Long Vowel Song | Best Phonics - YouTube
Practice reading words with long vowels a & i with silent e (See Long Vowels a and i with Silent e under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading)
Practice spelling the following words: bake, made, tape, wake, mane, date
Read each word and have your child write it on a piece of paper.
Challenge Words: pancake, handmade
Write 10 words with the word part -ake (example - cake, lake, snake etc.) Write a consonant, consonant blend, or consonant digraph to make a real or nonsense word. We do this activity in class on whiteboards, but a piece of paper is fine. Please have your child read the words back to you and be sure they have underlined the word part. If they can think of more words, great! I usually make it a game by giving them 2 minutes to write as many words as they can. You may also have them think of words with the word parts -ate, -ame, -ale.
Reading
I have assigned the story, My Boat, by Joy Cowley (See My Boat under Parent Resources- How to Help at Home - Reading). Please read the story with your child, if necessary. After reading, complete a retell worksheet for this story (See Retell under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Reading for template) If you have time, select another fiction book from Reading A-Z (see link) or Epic books and repeat assignment (you can do this on another day). Have your child verbally and accurately retell the story back to you.
Next Step (optional): Draw then write their retell on a separate piece of paper (They will have to do this in grade 1). If your child is not ready to do this, please do not force them to do it.
Listen to the assigned read aloud, What Do You Do With A Tail Like This?, by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page on YouTube. Click on What Do you Do With a Tail Like This! read Aloud - YouTube to watch. After listening to the read aloud, think of 2 or more examples of animals using their tails in different ways. Please remind them to use text evidence when coming up with their answers. (See Identify Reasons - Tails under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home -Reading for template).
Select 2 fiction or nonfiction books on you child's instructional reading level and practice reading fluency and comprehension (Reading A-Z - Leveled Readers & Epic have all reading levels). You can check the level of the readers they have been bringing home to know their instructional level. If they begin reading say level B pretty well, you can have them practice on level C. Level C is where they should be when they leave kindergarten.
Sight Words
Students should continue learning all 68 sight words. If your child has mastered all 68, they should move on to the Fry's list that is accessible on the class website. Flash cards are a good way to practice.

Writing
This week have your child write a narrative piece. Narrative pieces shouldn't require any texts. They should be able to choose a topic and write about it. (See Writing Information for Parents under Parent Resources - How to Help at Home - Writing). If you can, write everyday. You can choose to write a narrative, informational or opinion writing.
Math

Geometry - 3 Dimensional Shapes (cube, cylinder, cone, sphere)
Watch BrainPop Jr. to learn more about 3D shapes (also known as solid shapes). Go to the Manoa School website -Student Resources - Brain Pop Jr. (login with the username and password provided). Have your child go to Math - Geometry - Solid Shapes and watch the educational video.
You can reinforce what they learn by making sure your child is able to name the basic 3D shapes (cube, cylinder, cone, sphere). Draw and label real world examples of these solid shapes.
Exploring 3D Shapes - Find examples of 3D shapes around the house, then complete the 3D activity (See Shapes that Stand, Stack, and/or Roll under Parent Resources -How to Help at Home - Math for template). You will need to find at least two 3D shapes (cube, cylinder, cone, sphere) each to do this assignment.
Here are some examples of 3D shapes you might find around the house:
cube - kleenx box, block,
sphere - ball, marble
cylinder - soup can, toilet paper roll
cone - party hat, ice cream cone (if you are unable to find anything, roll a piece of paper into a cone)
